Big heaps to volunteers who showed up this past Sunday to remove more than 4 pick up loads of trash (estimated over 2 tons) from the important snowy plover beach habitat from Siltcoos to Tahkenitch. Responding to support requested from Oregon State Parks beach rangers for a rapid response cleanup, the Siuslaw Chapter consulted with USFS and OPRD to allow for special access, under their oversight, to help remove debris from the sensitive plover habitat and beach area.
In just over 3 hours, the crew had filled 4 pick up trucks with foam, lots of common single-use plastics, fishing rope and sadly some Japanese construction from sliding glass door frames to bathroom tile and insulation fragments. Just over 20 volunteers were able to make extremely efficient work of the area with the vehicle assistance from OPRD and despite the slightly stormy weather, all left with smiles on their faces, eager for another rapid debris response adventure!
