Come learn about the Siuslaw Chapter of Surfrider Foundation's expanded citizen science programs for monitoring within the newly designated Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve. Siuslaw Chapter volunteers and Surfrider staff will be doing a small workshop at their regularly scheduled meeting this Tuesday, September 3rd at 6:30 pm to help build community interest and volunteer support for their NOAA Shoreline Marine Debris Monitoring and Blue Water Task Force Programs. The programs, which actively engage volunteers, citizens and students in water quality and marine debris monitoring, are a fun and easy way to get involved in contributing ongoing science and maintaining lasting protections for these special places.
"With our agencies and resource managers doing much biological research and monitoring at sea within the marine reserve, less resources are available for monitoring the interactions between land and sea", says Charlie Plybon, Oregon Field Manager for Surfrider Foundation. He adds, "because beaches and coastal watersheds play an important role for recreational users, protecting and monitoring these areas are important to us". The Siuslaw Chapter of Surfrider Foundation is a local grassroots organization dedicated to the protection of oceans, waves and beaches and encourages anyone who might be interested in citizen science or ongoing monitoring of the Cape Perptua Marine Reserve to attend this Tuesday's presentation.
