Last week the Lane County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to pass a resolution supporting the Heceta Head-Cape Perpetua area to move forward for further evaluation and consideration as a potential marine reserve. This evaluation would occur over the next two years and would consist of further collection of biological information, socio-economic analysis, and on-going community collaboration. The resolution also supported the advancement of nearshore science, adequate funding for implementation, and the formation of a marine resource committee comprised of community members and ocean users. This resolution was passed with the input and support of the Port of Siuslaw, and the involvement of the Siuslaw Chapter thru their testimony at hearings and written letters to County Commissioners. Next time you see one of the Lane County Commissioners, tell them thank you for investing in the long term health of our nearshore waters, fisheries, and our communities.
